Our 1998 Audi A6 trim comparison volition help yous decide.

1998 Audi A6 review: Our expert'southward take

The verdict:

Versus the competiton:

All too frequently at an old car show, spectators will milkshake their heads while looking at an outlandish canvass metallic cosmos, and wonder, "What were they thinking?"

Tail fins, continental tire kits, vinyl roofs, AMC Pacers — the list goes on and on.

Certainly, the same charge could exist leveled today at the blob-mobiles that laissez passer for fashionable sedans or the outlandish, cartoony trucks that dealers tin't sell plenty of.

With people paying upwards of $40k for the safety of an all-wheel-drive vehicle, why don't more than people buy an Audi Quattro?

Certainly, the price of the automobile is right upward at that place with those of many sport utilities. And few of them have the stunning, artful shape this car has. Take a expect at the hood seam. It's part of a unmarried visual line that goes upwards the windshield, becoming a rain gutter as it arches beyond the roof, and transforms into a trunk seam every bit it trails into the back. This penchant for artful simplicity with an elegant twist is all over this car.

The full general shape filters down into the A4 and the VW Passat, albeit somewhat less successfully. Photos don't give the full impact this car has in person.

Within, the eloquence continues with iii distinct looks or 'environments': 'Ambition,' 'Ambiente' or 'Accelerate.' 'Ambition' features dark forest and muted colors on the upholstery. 'Ambiente' features lighter wood and bolder colors. 'Accelerate' goes for world tones and more than natural wood.

No thing which environment you choose, the driver will find a thoroughly modern German auto, with a warmer feel than is traditional.

Ergonomics are in the modernistic idiom, which means a center panel housing an excellent sound system just above the automatic climate controls.

The front saucepan seats are extremely firm — some might find them besides much so. I certainly did. But they're leather, heated and can be adjusted 12 ways.

The five-speed Porsche Tiptronic transmission falls readily to mitt and is the best of the automatic-manuals. But slide the shifter to the right hand side of the H-shaped gate. Tip it forward to upshift, backward to downshift. It allows some degree of control, meaning you can redline it, or start from 2nd if desired. Certainly it helps make this car even quicker because, although the engine has skilful power, at that place'due south non a ton of it at initial launch. The 2.8-liter thirty-valve V6 is good for 200 horsepower and 207 foot-pounds of torque.

Power is fed through either front end-wheel-bulldoze or quattro all-wheel-bulldoze. Annotation that the forepart-drive A6 has a torsion-beam rear interruption, while Quattro versions, similar the examination vehicle, go a more than sophisticated double-wishbone suspension.

The test vehicle was an A6 Quattro and the handling was excellent with little torso lean and a firm ride — expansion joints, though well-absorbed, can still exist felt and noted.

This is definitely a sports sedan, with a bit of luxury, rather than the reverse. If you have a bad back, drive information technology down a rotten road first. Needless to say, this is i car that can be hustled down a twisting route with gusto. Braking was outstanding thanks to 11.34-inch disc brakes front and rear.

The trunk is nicely finished, with more 17 cubic anxiety of trunk space, big for a European machine.

Artful, quick and fun, the shapely new Audi A6 sedan is a rebuttal of the aforementioned ol' thing from automakers and a good reply to those looking at an all-wheel-drive truck, but still wanting a sedan.

And when the truck fad fades, you won't expect out of date.

Very expensive to own

Beautifull car inside and out. They are but very unreliable and expensive to repair. After 60k mine just started to fall apart. Water pump, radiator cooling fan, timing belt, belt tensioner, CV joints, tie rods, front end suspension arms. Just sickening.

This automobile is very comfortable. The heater gets warm within a thing of sec'south & the heated seats are nifty! Everything is power controlled and the seats tin exist put in every postiion possible. The front & rear defroster works fast. The car is fast and very easy to manuever. It takes curves fast & tight,,,just love it! I also like the manual or automatic option. It has a great sound system with a 6 cd changer in the trunk. The dorsum seats fold down & at that place'south a identify to put skies in the trunk through the eye of the dorsum seats. I love this motorcar simply have to sell information technology to catch upward on hire and bills :( This machine would brand a wonderful Christmas gift for some special person.
